What is “alignment”?

Alignment has a specific meaning in every field. For instance,  in physics and mathematics, alignment in a system, including multiple components is the relative positioning of those components to keep them in a straight line or parallel to each other.

How is “alignment” related to “yoga”?

If you consider a physical body of a human as a system, the components can be referred to as the head, chest, abdominal and pelvic cavities and limbs. To align these components, the position of each needs to be determined with respect to a reference point, which is known as the origin of the coordinate system. This reference point varies from person to person because of the unique structure of the human body and different habitual patterns. In the contemporary yoga styles, which emphasise personalised yoga, “alignment” means a careful adjustment of the relative positioning between the back of the skull and upper spine, chin and the upper torso, torso and the lower spine, etc. This allows the lymph and oxygenated blood to flow freely across the body. The flow can reach all the cells, even those located at the furtherer distances from the centre of the body, such as toes and fingertips as if all the body components were integrated to a single point and well-centred.

What are the benefits of alignment?

Everybody who has a minimal practice of yoga has an experience of awakening and eye refreshing as consequences of the alignment of the physical, mental and spiritual bodies during yoga practice. In fact, the transmission of the signals between the heart and brain, these two main components of the human body, which are working alternatively as a pair of sender and receiver, requires calibration and alignment. This helps with better coordination of body movement, well-focused thinking, and a well-organized lifestyle.

What should we do to get the benefits of alignment?

The first step towards reaching unification in all aspects of humanity as mentioned above, we need to examine the current status of our health from the physical and mental to the spiritual points of view. To obtain such a complete examination, practical yoga approaches create an environment for an individual to fully explore habitual patterns and examine the coordination of movement. In addition, yoga is a comprehensive method including a variety of exercises, from breathing techniques to meditation, that allow everyone to calibrate and compensate for misalignment.

In fact, adjusting the alignment invites us into a deeper level of exploration of our existence in different aspects from the physical shape of our bodies to the way of thinking and feeling. Therefore, we can earn the ability to connect to our own source of healthiness and awareness in a profound way and can discover such treasures that are hidden in our hearts’ centers.

It is a journey towards self-realization, self-confidence and a pathway to the freedom of being purely ourselves. This is a big achievement of the intuitive exploration of ourselves with our unique body structures.

What is the ideal alignment?

There is no ideal postural alignment. The pathway to the central body is beyond definition.  Each stage of yoga, there is some more to explore. Students of the mindfulness pathway enjoy this journey rather than being in a rush to reach the final destination. On this earth school, those lovers open their hearts to explore more and more and get prepared without considering how far they have reached.

Yoga Alignment invites all to disconnect from the past and the future to be born in the present moment. In this way, we can connect through our true selves with pure love and patience. Right here, we can find the stability point and settle there to discover ourselves.
