What is "alignment"?

Alignment has a specific meaning in every field. For instance, in computer science, the alignment can be referred to as arranging data in memory for reaching a specific reason or to lining data up with a required format. In physics and mathematics, alignment in a system including several components is basically the relative positioning of those components to keep them into a straight line or parallel to each other.

How is “alignment” related to “yoga”?

If you consider a physical body of a human as a system, the components can be referred to as the head, chest, abdominal and pelvic cavities and limbs. To align these components, the position of each needs to be determined with respect to a reference point which is known as the origin of the coordinate system. This reference point varies from person to person because of the unique structure of the human body and different habitual patterns. In the contemporary yoga styles, which are emphasising on personalised yoga (considering variation between the bodies and degree of freedoms of the joints), alignment means a careful adjustment of the relative positioning between the back of the skull and upper spine, chin and the upper torso, torso and the lower spine, etc. This allows the lymph and oxygenated blood to freely flow across the body and reach all the cells even those located in the furtherer distances from the center of body such as toes and finger tips as if all the body components were integrated to a single point and well-centred.

What are the benefits of alignment?

Everybody who has a minimal practice of yoga has an experience of awakening and eye refreshing as consequences of the alignment of the physical, mental and spiritual bodies during yoga practice. In fact, the transmission of the signals between the heart and brain, these two main components of the human body which are working alternatively as a pair of sender and receiver, requires calibration and alignment. This helps with better coordination of body movement, well-focused thinking, and a well-organized life-style.

What should we do to get the benefits of alignment?

The first step towards reaching unification in all aspects of humanity as mentioned above, we need to examine the current status of our health from the physical and mental to the spiritual points of view. To obtain such a complete examination, practical yoga approaches create an environment for an individual to fully explore the habitual patterns and examine the coordination of movement. In addition, yoga is a comprehensive method including a variety of exercises from breathing techniques to meditation that allow ones to calibrate and compensate for misalignment.

In fact, adjusting the alignment invites us into a deeper level of exploration of our existence in different aspects from the physical shape of our bodies to the way of thinking and feeling. Therefore, we can earn the ability to connect to our own source of healthiness and awareness in a profound way and can discover such treasures that are hidden in our hearts’ centers.

It is actually a journey towards self-realization, self-confidence and perceiving the true concept of freedom for being purely ourselves. This is a big achievement of the intuitive exploration of ourselves with our unique body structures.

What is the ideal status of alignment?

There is no ideal status for the postural alignment. In a simple word, the pathway to the central body is undefined; it is basically beyond definition. The truth is that there is some more to explore at each stage. However, students of the mindfulness pathway enjoy stepping through this pathway rather than being in a rush to reach the final destination. On this earth school, those lovers open their hearts to explore more and more and get prepared without considering how far they have reached. There is no past to feel regret or no future to be worried about it. Such people are born in every moment without any fear as they were empowered themselves with pure love and patience. They found the stability point and settled there to find the truth.
